The well driller, and learning to call ahead

Log Entry #13 · Development Day 1450Lessons Learned · May 30, 2026

You cannot rent a cabin with no water. Which means somewhere on the critical path to opening day sits a person with a drilling rig, and for a while that person would not return my calls.

I want to be fair to the trades here. Good well drillers are busy, weather-dependent, and buried in requests from people who will flake. They have learned to ration their phone time. Still, there is a particular flavor of humbling that comes from leaving cheerful voicemails for a stranger who holds a small but non-negotiable piece of your dream, and hearing nothing back.

When I finally reached one who would talk to me, I hit the catch. He would not put me on the schedule until I had a firmer idea of when the permits would come through. Which was reasonable, and also maddening, because the permits were the exact thing I could not pin down. The well waited on the permit. The permit waited on the county and on VDOT. The whole project had become a set of dominoes where everyone was politely waiting for the domino in front of them to fall first.

This is the part of building nobody photographs. It is not dramatic. It is a man with a rig saying "tell me when," and me saying "I'll tell you the second I know," and both of us meaning it, and neither of us able to move.

What it taught me is that scheduling is not a step you do once. It is a live thing you have to keep warm. You call before you need them. You keep them in the loop as dates firm up, so that the day the permit lands you are already on the calendar instead of at the back of the line. A confirmed permit with no driller booked is just a slower kind of waiting.

He is on the hook now. Loosely. The way everything out here is on the hook: pending the next domino.

What changed
  • After weeks of unanswered calls, a well driller finally picked up, with a condition attached.
What comes next

Firming up the timeline enough to earn that spot, and the water the cabins cannot open without.
